CD of the week: The Fireman - Electric Arguments

Thursday, November 27, 2008, 01:00

It’s 10 years since Paul McCartney and former Killing Joke bassist-turned-producer Youth brought us one of their Fireman albums.

As the Zeppelin-esque riff of opener Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight kicks in, the feeling of it being worth the wait is overwhelming.

From that bluesy stomp, we’re taken through the gentle acoustic ditty that is Two Magpies, Highway, which could easily be a Wings track from the early ’70s, and on to album finale, the sprawling, experimental Universal Here, Everlasting Now.

Equally cursed and blessed by his stature as a former Beatle, much of Sir Paul’s recent work has come in for a critical kicking, and while he’ll never top what the Fab Four achieved, this collaboration is as close as he’s come in a long, long time.
